St Pierre Park - Guernsey's first Five Crown Hotel was officially opened on 11th May 1983, the result of three years hard work in converting one of the Island's most historic buildings into a Luxury Hotel.
The splendour that is The St Pierre Park today, has its origins in the early 19th Century when it was known as Vimiera College and belonged to a Monastic Order, the Brothers St Jean Batiste de la Salle.
From their small home, which is now the location of the elegant Victor Hugo Restaurant, the Brothers gradually extended the site, adding on a Chapel, now La Seigneurie, 1908.
Illuminated by beautiful stained glass windows, the Chapel housed a magnificent church organ, which could be heard throughout Guernsey.
The occupation saw Vimiera College as a convalescent home for wounded German Soldiers, but, upon their return after the war, the Brothers tendered for a local family to take on the residence.
From 1946 to 1971 the leasehold of Vimiera was held by the Quevatres family who came to the college without savings. They farmed the land and reinvested the proceeds into the establishment. What today is the Golf Course, was for the Quevatres a cider orchard.
Eventually, the name and status were changed as Vimiera became The Vimiera Hotel, with accommodation of 45 bedrooms. Unfortunately disaster struck for the family when the Brothers St Jean Batiste de la Salle were issued with a directive to sell the property. Although their business was reasonable, the Quevatres were left penniless.
For the next seven years the future of the Vimiera was unsettled. It even reverted for a while to an educational institution, but was subsequently left empty until being taken over by one of the largest public owned companies in the Channel Islands, the Jersey based Ann Street Brewery, who were looking for a suitable location for a luxury hotel. This proved to be the conclusion of a rather turbulent past for the Vimiera and the beginning of an illustrious new era.
The site was cleared, and the religious items were thoughtfully re-housed and the chapel organ was given a new congregation to bellow at in France.
The result is a peaceful, stylish Island haven, offset by a panorama of lake and undulating parkland. Vimiera was renamed St Pierre Park through a prize competition won by Alison Warr, a local girl.
The 131 St Pierre Park bedrooms and private suites are superb in comfort and luxury, with furnishings perfectly coordinated. Each room is en-suite, enjoying the delight of a private balcony, terrace or garden patio. There are 8 suites each taking their name from one of Guernsey's nearby Islands. The Penthouse suite (The Guernsey) consists of 2 bedrooms with bathrooms en-suite, plus lounge dining-room and kitchen - totally self-contained.
Indeed, St Pierre Park offers all the facilities expected of a luxury hotel.
